George W. Lyon Rites Scheduled Tuesday - Civil War Veteran, Signally Honored on 100th Birthday, Dies Shortly After (1940)

Inwood, Ia., Feb. 5.- Funeral services for George W. Lyon, 100, Lyon county's last Civil War veteran, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Methodist church, with Rev. Ralph Baker and Rev. A. Tinklenberg officiating. The American Legion, of which he was an honorary member, will be in charge of the services, with six grandsons acting as pallbearers.

Mr. Lyon, who was born January 27, 1840, was royally honored on his 100th birthday. Each business place in town displayed large placards in its windows, with his picture and the flags were raised all day in his honor. He received over 300 cards, letters, and telegrams of congratulations, and letters from President Roosevelt, Governor Wilson of Iowa, Governor Horner of Illinois, and Guy M. Gillette and Clyde Herring, United States Senators. He was greatly pleased at receiving greetings from 13 old Civil War veterans.

Mr. Lyon suffered a heart attack Friday afternoon and died at 6:10 p.m. Surviving are two sons, C.D. Lyon of Inwood, and W.E. Lyon of Flint, Michigan; one brother C.E. Lyon, of Canyon City, Oregon; a sister, Mrs. Mary Massey, of Portland, Ore., 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Interment will be made in Richland cemetery.
