HARRIS, RALPH J.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Methodist church for Ralph J. Harris, 55, Madison chief of police since 1932, who died early today after several weeks of illness.

The Rev. Stephen J. Jones and the Rev. Robert H. Wagner will conduct the funeral service.

Chief Harris, who first consulted a doctor in February, has been failing since that time. He took a leave of absence April 1, and went to Rochester, Minn., and Baltimore, Md., to consult specialists. During the last few days he had been in considerable pain and this week was not allowed to have visitors.

Ralph Jeffrey Harris was born July 8, 1892 at Inwood, Iowa. He attended the city schools and graduated from high school there. He was married December 24, 1913 to Iva Sherman at Parma, Idaho. Came Here in 1927--

They moved to Lane where Mr. Harris farmed for several years, moving to Junius in 1922 and to Madison in the fall of 1927, when he became a member of the police force. He was made chief of police under Dr. W.A. Rothschild's administration in 1932 and held that position up to the time of his death.

Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Muriel Anderson of Minneapolis and Mrs. Ella Belle Coyle of Denver; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. I.J. Harris; two sisters, Mrs. George Feay of Moorehead, Minn., and Mrs. R.N. (Bud) Billings of Brookings.

Chief Harris was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Izaak Walton League, the South Dakota Peace Officers Association, the Tri-State Peace Officers Association, the National Association of Chiefs of Police.
Quit State Post--

He was secretary of the South Dakota organization for more than ten years, resigning that post about April 1 when he took a leave of absence from his active duties.

Mr. Harris was one of the best known men in the city and county, and had many friends through the state, many of whom will come here for the service Friday.

Out of respect for Chief Harris, shades will be pulled on all business places during the funeral Friday afternoon.
