MRS. JAS. GILMAN

Death of Mrs. Jas. Gilman

The announcement of the death of Mrs. Jas. Gilman Tuesday morning came as a sudden shock to the community who were not aware that the lady was in any serious condition.

Mrs. Gilman has been a sufferer from a tumor for some time, and after consulting numerous physicians and surgeons they decided that their only hope of saving her life would be to perform a surgical operation. The latter was decided upon, and accompanied by her husband she went to the hospital at Sheldon, where at 10 o'clock Saturday morning the operation was performed. The patient revived from the effects of the anesthetics administered, and was conscious up to the last, but the shock to her system, and the loss of blood was so great that she gradually sunk until death came at three o'clock Tuesday morning.

Lucy M. Stickney was born in Wisconsin, March 25, 1847, and moved with her parents to Sioux County in 1870. She was married to James R. Gilman at the home of her brother, Maurice, near Hull, November 15, 1874, and they have resided in Rock Rapids since that time.

The deceased was a Christian woman and beloved by all who knew her. Her life was devoted to her family and friends, and was filled with deeds of charity. To the poor and unfortunate, she was ever Lady Bountiful, giving with a lavish hand, and the sick always received sympathy and consolation by her visitation. Her death is an affliction to the community and a heavy loss to her family. She was a member of the Congregational Church for many years, but last fall identified herself with the Peoples' Church, and was the embodiment of Christian graces. Besides a husband she leaves to mourn her loss, five children, True, Ada, Lettie, Lottie and Rena, the youngest being a little past eleven years old. Her mother and two sisters reside in Arizona and a brother in California and one in Sioux County.

The funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, Reverend A.J. Williams conducting the services.
