Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 28, 2002 at Hope Reformed Church of rural George, Iowa, for Mae Kruse Folkema, 78, of Sand Lake Michigan, and formerly of George, Iowa. Pastor David Vander Laan and Pastor Al Honken officiated. Serving as casket bearers were: Rodney Krull, Kenneth Krull, Robert Krull, Alan Hilbrands, Darrin Popkes and Keith Hansmann. Burial was in the Hope Reformed Cemetery of rural George.

Mae Folkema was born on June 22, 1923 at George, Iowa, the daughter of William and Minnie (Goldhorn) Siebrands. She graduated from the George High School and the Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She married Henry E. Kruse on August 29, 1945 at Hope Reformed Church parsonage of George, Iowa. They farmed west of George. Mae was a school teacher for 40 years -- first 14 years in country school and the remaining 26 years in the George Elementary School. She had many fond memories of those years, and was loved by her students. While living in the George area, Mae was a faithful and active member of Hope Reformed Church.

Henry died in January of 1991. One August 7, 1993 Mae was married to John Folkema in Grant, Michigan. After she moved to Michigan she remained in close contact with her family and friends, visiting them as often as she could. She became very involved in Grant Christian Reformed Church. She was a member of Dorcas Society and helped cordinate the church centennial celebration. Mae loved the Lord and her prayer was that all those she loved would share in that same love.

Mae died on Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Spectrum Health-Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of 78.

She was survived by her husband John of Sand Lake, Michigan; two nephews, Dwayne Siebrands of Sheldon, Iowa, and Alan and Beth Siebrands of Good Thunder, Minnesota. and their children: Eric, Dave, and Mike Siebrands and Meghan and Michael Johns; step children Bob and Joanie Folkema of Jenison, Michigan; Bev and Jim Felkey of Wyoming, Michigan; Fred and Faye Folkema of Sand Lake, Michigan; Tim and Sherry Folkema of Casnovia, Michigan; Dan and Sharon Folkema of Fremont, Michigan; Jane and Doug Walstra of Grover City, Ohio; 17 step grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law, Georgia Siebrands; Donna Kruse, Margaret Kruse and Arlys Kruse.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Henry and one brother, Peter Siebrands.

Bolin Funeral Service, George, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
