HIRAM H. PAINE died at the home of his daughter, MRS. W.F. NEWHOUSE, near
Oakley, Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held at Oxford on Tuesday.
MR. PAINE was the father of R.S. PAINE and was one of the old citizens of
Lincoln Township and at the time of death was 92 years old. Surely his
allotment of time was unstinted. His life work is now done and the fitful
fever is at end. MR. PAINE was ever a good citizen and leaves an honorable
career as the best monument that can be built to the memory of an
individual.

H.H. PAINE ~

HIRAM H. PAINE was born in Jefferson County, N.Y., and died Feb. 2, 1908,
aged 92 years, 2 months and 1 day. Soon after attaining his majority he
went to Kalamazoo County, Mich., where on August 26, 1847, he was united in
marriage to ARAMINTA C. GARDNER, her death occurring Jan. 8, 1900, at the
age of 78 years, 1 month and three days.

In February, 1854, with wife and two children he came to Iowa, settling in
Cedar Rapids, Linn County, where he engaged in the grocery business until
1863 when he removed to a farm near Cedar Rapids which he occupied for five
years. In April, 1868, he came to Lucas County, settling 3 l/2 miles
northeast of Chariton, where with the exception of a few years in Chariton,
where he conducted a flour and feed store on the east side of square, and
the past two years living with a daughter in Oakley, he has since resided.

Though stricken with blindness and almost deaf, yet his mental faculties
were retained until almost the last hour. The infirmities of years sat
heavily upon him, however, and in these last years he had often expressed a
desire and readiness for the final call. The children surviving him are six
MRS. JOHN HENRY, MRS. WM. NEWHOUSE and R.S. PAINE of this county; A.V.
PAINE and E.H. PAINE of Oklahoma, and MRS. ANDREW ALEXANDER of Orchard,
Nebraska. Two children died in infancy. Of his grandchildren twenty-one
are living and three have died. There are five living great grandchildren;
one has died.

MR. PAINE came of a long lived family, his father and mother each having
lived to the age of ninety or more years. In character he was ingenuous in
all that is implied by that term. Frank -- perhaps to bluntness, sometimes,
free from all equivocation, ever ready to assist those in need, to the
extent of his abilities, free born and half white as he sometimes expressed.

After a brief funeral conducted by Rev. Sloan of Oakley, at Oxford Church,
on Tuesday a.m. at 11:30 o'clock the remains were laid to rest in Oxford
Cemetery beside his companion for over half a century.

In politics MR. PAINE was a lifelong democrat and cast his first
Presidential vote for Martin Van Buren.
