The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 16, 1908

ADELLAH W. BRIGHTWELL was born in McDoughner County, Ohio, August 9, 1839,
where she grew to womanhood. She was married June 27, 1857, to J.F. SPIKER.
They came to Lucas County the same year, and located on a farm in English
Township, where they resided until about five years ago, when they came to
Chariton, which place has since been their home.

She has been a member of the Christian Church for over fifty years, and has
since been a faithful follower of her Master. Eight children were born to
this union, one daughter, MRS. MARTHA BYERS, of Belinda and seven sons, H.M.
of Columbia; ELMER, J.E., R.E., and VERN, of Chariton; ADISON, of English
Township, and FRED, of Sheridan, Wyom., all being present but the latter.
Besides her husband and children she leaves one brother, SAMUEL BRIGHTWELL
of English Township, and one sister, MRS. DEWEES, of Illinois. She had been
a patient sufferer for eighteen months with cancer, and for the past five
months suffered intensely, and death came only as a relief.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Wednesday afternoon at
one o'clock, conducted by Elder Chas. Wells, Pastor of the church, and the
remains interred in the Chariton Cemetery. Sympathy of the community is
extended to the bereaved family.
