The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, June 13, 1907

MRS. W.E. LEWIS attended the funeral of her brother, GEORGE J. REED, who
died at Leavenworth, Kansas, on the 5th inst. of diseases contracted while
confined in Andersonville prison. The deceased was a native of Ohio, born
63 years ago, the 12th day of this month. He grew to manhood in Chariton,
and for many years conducted a barber shop here. He enlisted in the 8th
Iowa Cavalry and served throughout the war, being held a prisoner in the
Andersonville prison five months. Several years since, he applied for
admission to the Soldier's Home at Leavenworth, but at the time of his death
was being cared for at St. John's Hospital.

He has many acquaintances still residing in Chariton, who will learn of his
death with sorrow. Thus,

"Again when the roll on earth is called

No responsive voice will there be heard."
