The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 11, 1907

The subject of this sketch was born in Mill Port, Chennung County, New York
State, November 26, 1814. At the age of twenty-two he moved to Elkhart,
Indiana, and in 1839, to Three Rivers, Michigan, where he opened a cooper
shop. His skill as a mechanic was widely recognized, among the older
settlers; is commented upon even to this day. He was united in marriage to
EMMA COLES, the daughter of a Methodist Episcopal clergyman, December 24,
1841; after a wedded life of ten years, she died. Four children were born
to them, all of whom are deceased. In 1852, May 11, he was joined in
marriage to HANNAH DUNKIN, who died August 21, 1903. They had ten children,
of whom six sons and three daughters survive.

At the advanced age of ninety-two past, under the roof of his son, H.V.
CANFIELD, with whom he had made his home for twenty-one years, God called
him to the house of many mansions; the date and place of his death, April 3,
1907, in Humeston.

The deceased lived in Lucas County about fifty years; was a member of the M
E. Church from his youth. By those who knew him in the years of his active
life, he is spoken as a man in whom the presence of God was pronounced. He
was characterized by genuine piety and unpretentious zeal.
