The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 24, 1907

The remains of J.Y. STYER were brought here from Gowrie, Iowa, Monday and
interred in the Chariton Cemetery. He had two daughters buried there. The
fatal disease was paralysis, he having had three strokes within the past
year. He was a Mason and the order here took charge of his funeral.

He left a wife, and one daughter and one grandson survive him. If the
Leader remembers rightly he was a native of Virgina, and was past sixty
years of age. He founded the first newspaper office in Russell, which he
leased to another party. This was known as the Russell News, and the editor
of the Leader afterwards purchased the outfit of him which was his first
venture in the business. J.Y. STYER was a lawyer by profession but more
generally "starting", selling and buying county newspapers, was his business
and it is probable that he founded and christened more country newspapers
than any other man residing in Iowa; at Leon, Osceola, Lucas, Russell,
Melrose, Swan, Slater and other places.
