The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 17, 1907

MICHAEL BUTCHER was born in Monroe County, Indiana, near Bedford, January 17
1849. When but a little child he moved with his parents to this state,
locating in Monroe County, near Lovilia, where he grew to manhood's estate.
He was united in marriage to MISS ADDA BELL about thirty-two years ago. To
them were born two daughters, MRS. 0LLIE BUSSAER of Albia, and MRS. ALCIA
WILCOX of Hebron, Neb. After a few short years he was left alone with his
two small children, his wife having been called to a better world. He
continued to reside in Monroe County, where he purchased a farm near the
Lucas County line.

In April, 1889, he was married to MRS. MARY HOGAN; to this union were born
three boys, FREDDIE, LEONARD and EVERETT, who remain at home. Besides his
immediate family, he leaves two brothers and three sisters, one brother,
WILLIAM, residing in Chariton, the other residing near Lovilia. He was a
resident of Chariton for a time, a few years ago, but afterwards returned to
his farm. He again took up his residence in Chariton, last Oct., buying
property on North Main Street, where they had since resided.

MR. BUTCHER had been in failing health for the past year and had been away
for treatment at various times, but without permanent relief. Three weeks
ago he was taken to a Keokuk hospital and his case was pronounced by
specialists there to be cancer of the stomach. He died Tuesday evening, Jan
16, (sic) at the hospital, and the remains were brought to his home in
Chariton, Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be held at Lovilia,
Friday, in the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Hartman, Pastor of the U.B.
Church at Lovilia, of which he was a faithful member.

He was an upright man and met all obligations of life promptly and well and
the best encomium that can be pronounced is that he was a good citizen and
measured well up to the true standard of manhood.
