JACOB MORRETT, a well-to-do farmer, of Union Township, Wayne County, was
killed in the Chariton railroad yards Monday night, by the cars, and his
body was horribly mangled when found. He was a frequent visitor at Chariton
and drove into town that day, putting up his team at the Stewart feed yards,
and during the day called at several places about town as was his custom.
When No. 12 pulled into the yards that night the engineer discovered the
mangled remains of a man by the side of the track and notified I.M. Harrison
who in turn sent for the county coroner and undertaker, N.S. Melville. How
long MR. MORRETT had been dead was impossible to determine, or what train
had struck him, but it is presumed he was on the track near the water crane
when the accident occurred. One of his hands and a foot were near there and
not far away was his heart, liver and other entrails. His body was found
not far from the crossing west of the freight office, having been dragged
that distance before being released. It was a ghastly sight but the
fragments were gathered up and taken to the Melville undertaking rooms. On
account of condition, interment was soon necessary.

When the body was found it was lying in a promiscuous heap, tossed by
violence. The family north of New York was notified and two of the deceased
s sons arrived in the city Tuesday morning, but their mother was away in
Michigan at the time. MR. MORRETT was not far from sixty years of age, had
a wife and grown family, and had been thrifty in business all his life but
had long been addicted to the liquor habit and was under the influence that
day and it is presumed he was wandering about and got onto the tracks
unconscious of what he was about.
