RIGGS - Jesse Grant Riggs, son of Jesse Joseph and Matilda Riggs, was born December 29, 1888, on a farm near Newbern, Lucas county and passed away at Memorial Hospital in Chariton July 29, 1967 at the age of 78 years and seven months. He was associated with farming for several years and worked at Veterans Hospital at Knoxville, 17 years, retiring in 1959.

On February 12, 1913, he was united in marriage to Elvira White of the same area and to this union was born six daughters and one son. His wife and the mother of the children passed away November 25, 1930. He was united in marriage to Olive Peterson February 24, 1945.

He was converted in early life and united with the Presbyterian Church in English township.

In addition to his widow, Olive, surviving him are: four daughters; Mrs. Kathryn Richards, Mrs. Irene Gardiner, Mrs. Martha Bauge, and Mrs. Phyllis Mauk, all of Des Moines; one son, Clyde of Chariton; two sisters; Mrs. Rena Hunerdosse of Newbern and Mrs. Ethel Gardiner of Chariton; two brothers: Robert Riggs of Clear Lake, Calif., and Lloyd Riggs of Chariton; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters; Helen in 1929 and Ethel Jean Murphy in 1941; also one grandchild, Donald Riggs and one great-grandchild, Patrick Gardiner.

Services were conducted by James Green at 2 p.m., Monday, July 21, 1967, at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
