Chariton Harald - Patriot Thursday, March 2, 1911

Cyrus Douglass Scott was born Jan. 18, 1831 in Jackson Co., Indiana, and passed away at his residence in Lincoln township, Lucas Co., Iowa, Feb. 22, 1911, aged 80 years, 1 month and 4 days.
When quite young he suffered an injury to his foot which never gave him much trouble until this winter, when gangrene developed.
About two weeks before his death, by his own expressed desire and against the advice of his attending physician and his family and friends, his leg was amputated in the hope that his life might be saved, but all to no avail, and he gradually sank until death relieved his sufferings.
His residence was in Jackson Co., Indiana, until he was 19 years of age when he came to the old home farm in Lincoln township, where he has made his earthly residence ever since, a period of 61 years.
He was united in marriage Dec. 17, 1854 to miss. Eliza Jane Wilson. This bond remained unbroken through 56 years of earthly companionship, until Mr. Scott answered the call of the Master on Wednesday morning.
To this union were born nine children. Of these, two sons and one daughter preceded him beyond the veil, while four sons George, Andrew, Perry M., Virgil, and two daughters Mrs, Mary Steele, and Miss. Lilly Scott and eight grandchildren remain with there mother and grandmother to mourn the loss they have suffered.
Besides these one sister, Mrs. J. A. J. Bentley of Chariton and three half brothers and one half sister survive him.
Early in his manhood he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, of which membership his friends with one consent bear witness to his consistency and fidelity.
Thus another of God's nobleman has exchanged the earthly home for the heavenly and we who remain are urged by the power of his christian living to walk in the same godliness and serve with equal fidelity the risen Lord.
Funeral services were conducted from the home Friday afternoon at 1:30 by Rev. D. J. Shenton of Blockton, Iowa, assisted by Rev. G. W. Wood, of Russell, Ia., and Rev. Hugh Moore of Chariton. Interment took place in the Chariton cemetery.
Those from out of town who were in attendance at the last sad writes were Mr. Geo Scott and his son Carl and wife, of Rawlins, Wyoming; Virgil Scott of Boise, Idaho; Mrs. Mary Steele and daughter, Effie, of Des Moines; Mrs. John Miller, of Albia; Mrs. Chas. Maxwell, of Indianola; O. R. Gookin and family of Ottumwa; Scott McCormick, Charles Whitham, Frank McCormick, of Fairfield; Rev. D. J. Jacobus and wife of Henderson
