Alida Smith, 97, a retired D.C. school teacher and active clubwoman, died Saturday at her home in Northwest Washington.

She had taught Latin at Central High School for 26 years before retiring in the early 1940s. She then traveled extensively abroad and at one time studied at Oxford University.

Born in Lucas County, Iowa. Miss Smith graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, which later honored her with a doctor of humanities degree.

She earned a master's degree at the University of Michigan. After she started teaching here, she earned a degree from the old Washington College of Law. Although she never actively practiced law she was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court.

Miss Smith was a life member of the Washington Club and founded its poetry section. She wrote poetry and some of her work was published in anthologies.

She was a former president of the University Women's Club here. She was an active member for many years of Foundtry United Methodist Church.

There are no immediate survivors.
