The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 30, 1908The Chariton School Board held a meeting on Monday evening and set its ban
against the class organizations in our city schools. In view of the
agitation over the question of class dues and class functions the board
wisely decided to assert its full authority and abolish the entire cause of
contention. So no permanent class organizations, where dues are levied,
will be permitted. This does not mean that temporary organization, for specific purposes,
cannot be effected and therefore class pride and class interest should not
suffer. But these temporary organizations must be in strict harmony with
educational work and when the specific purpose is accomplished, dissolved.
This might be particularized by the statement that they should refer to
graduations, mementoes to teachers, educational contests, literary studies,
etc., but never to the outside social. The pupils in our city schools are of excellent quality and the Leader is
pleased to speak of this and defend them against whatever of misjudgment
they have suffered. They will cheerfully recognize this more strict
discipline and pursue that harmonious work so essential to educational
progress. Indiscretions are not strictly confined to youth and wholesome
rules never come amiss, but are absolutely essential in school work.
