The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, August 22, 1907

In the August number of the Journal of the American Medical Assn. appeared
the rating of Iowa's medical institutions as reported by the State Board of
Medical Examiners.

The examinations for permit to practice in the State were not confined to
Iowa students alone, but included representatives from the leading
institutions of the country, among which may be mentioned the College of P.
& S. and Northwestern University, of Chicago, two Philadelphia Schools, a
New York School, and a Cincinnati College.

Of the 140 doctors examined by the Board, 71 per cent were Iowa candidates,
and the report of the examinations shows that the mean average of the State
University's 1907 Class is 80.38 per cent of Drake's 81.26 per cent of
Keokuk's 81.55 percent.

But Keokuk not only ranks highest in the mean average of her graduating
class; but also had one of her graduates receive the highest -- that of 94
per cent. The next higher was 90 per cent received by two graduates of
Keokuk and one from Drake; one graduate from the State University received
89 per cent as a general average.

This leaves Keokuk Medical College with a generous margin to its credit and
allows it to rank as first of the Iowa Medical Schools.

It will be gratifying to the citizens of Lucas County to know that the
candidate receiving the highest grade in the State -- that of 94 per cent --
is a resident of our city, Dr. JEANNETTE THROCKMORTON.
