RESIGNATION OF REV. PALMER

PALMER

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, July 25, 1907

The Leader regrets much that Rev. F.B. PALMER has tendered his resignation
to his congregation and that he and his family expect soon to leave Chariton
and locate at Boulder, Colorado, where he has been called to the pastorate
of the Baptist Church, but of course, wish them well when the change is made
We say the Leader regrets it. This is a mild way of expressing it, for
personally the writer never had a warmer friend than Rev. PALMER has been or
one more helpful in his work or received a greater share of our confidences
-- thus the separation causes more than the usual degree of that which we
call regret. But it would be thoroughly selfish to consult alone our own
wishes and the Leader views his going away much as does his congregation --
strengthened by his association, accepting all for the best.

Rev. PALMER is a man of unusual tact and power, a fact which the people, of
Boulder, will not be long in finding out. During the greater part of the
decade in which he has been in Chariton, he has not only taken a deep
interest in the affairs of his church but has been broad in all the
relations of citizenship. His heart has been in his work and his full
energies have been employed in that which would build up society,
spiritually, mentally morally and commercially. He does not belong to that
class who think that a minister of the Gospel's duty is to preach only and
to be a laggard in everything else. His sermons have been vigorous and to
the point. He never apologizes for the faith within him or attempts to
conceal his beliefs on any subject. When he failed to approve certain
things he said so and his endorsements were never half hearted. He was
pronounced against the liquor traffic and did everything honorable to
suppress it -- waging battle against the system rather than the individual,
but uncompromising against the violators of the law. Seldom was there a
public meeting of any character of general interest which Rev. PALMER did
not attend and express his views if proper to the occasion, and by these
traits won his way into the regards of the people irrespective of creed,
society or affiliation. So it is that the Chariton Baptist Church not only
loses its pastor but Chariton and Lucas County one of its most influential
citizens as well.
