The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, July 11, 1907

The 4th was celebrated in Warren Township by neighborhood parties and
picnics. May and Amity had a picnic near Mr. Huntley's. About 30 of
Harmony and vicinity, fished on Chariton River. Who got the largest fish
will perhaps never be decided, but when it came to eating ice cream, it was
conceded by all that J.W. Rosa won first prize. This party was honored by
the presence of one of our oldest settlers, THOS. CURTIS, and while the men
fished and the children "celebrated" in the usual way, Uncle THOMAS in his
quiet manner gave us the benefit of his recollections of frontier life, a
half century ago, with his family in a covered wagon, he journeyed from Ohio
to Iowa, and has since made this his home. The change since then is
surprising, and many incidents of pioneer life are both interesting and
instructive. What was then considered the luxuries of life, is now only
plain necessity. Indeed it is hard for us to imagine the privations
encountered, and hardships endured by the sturdy men and women, who gave the
best of their lives for the development of this country. This was the basis
of what might have been a fine 4th of July speech. As a matter of fact, we
are lacking in true Patriotism, and fail to understand the debt of gratitude
we owe the passing generation, for giving us the greatest and grandest
Nation the sun shines on.

Editor Greene of the "Herald" was a Derby visitor on the 4th, and on his
return stopped at harmony, and gave some friends a ride in his fine Buick
Auto, that was very much appreciated. He in turn complimented us on our
good roads, the result of the drag, and gratuitous work of energetic farmers
