The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, September 26, 1907

W.O. MILLER, of English Township, returned from his trip to Cheyenne,
Wyoming, Sunday evening, and we can only class him as a temporary citizen.
While away he purchased a 160 acre tract of land near Luther, a new town,
and also filed on another 160. This will give him a half section of land
and it is his intention to locate with his family in that country in the
spring. MR. MILLER says the soil is good and that this part of the State
had been denied settlement on account of being under the control of the
cattlemen, but they have been forced out and hundreds of farmers are now
coming in and securing land in small tracts. The soil is covered with
buffalo grass but it produces the finest wheat and other grains and
vegetables in abundance, and it is also said that timothy and clover does
well when started. The land agents are having an inning. One firm in
Cheyenne has $15,000 invested in automobiles and the way they do whiz
tenderfoots through the country is marvelous even in this fast age. The old
way of locomotion is entirely too slow. In parts of the country visited the
land can be irrigated but where MR. MILLER's land is located they depend on
the rainfall, which has usually proven adequate. He tells of the sections
depending on what is known as "dry farming." The spring moisture is
retained by pressing the ground with heavy rollers and shallow cultivation,
and in this way human genius has baffled the elements fairly well.

As is the custom MR. MILLER also returns with some big fish stories, stating
that some of the finest fish he ever saw come down through the irrigating
ditches and were deposited right in the gardens, but he didn't speak of any
manna trees growing wild in that part of the country. Perhaps they have to
be set out.
