The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, October 10, 1907

In his reminiscences, as published in last week's Leader, THOMAS BRANDON
spoke of JOHN BALLARD and an experience of his in this county in 1844, and
requested anyone knowing anything about the circumstance to make it known.
JOHN BALLARD, the pioneer, was the grandfather of GEORGE BALLARD, of English
Township, who says that along in the early 50s his grandfather started with
an expedition to California, the gold excitement being high at that time and
while crossing the plains this expedition was surrounded by Indians and his
grandfather was among the number massacred.
