The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 17, 1907

AQUILLA KERN was killed on the railroad track, between Zero and Melrose,
Tuesday morning. He resided at Zero, where the mine was formerly located,
about half way between Russell and Melrose. He was walking on the track
with gun, going hunting, and facing the fast mail, No. 7, on its way west.
He stepped on the other track to avoid it, not noticing the approach of No.
10, the east bound train, which struck him, almost instantly killing him.
He was picked up and taken to Melrose and there provision was made for
taking care of his body and his friends notified.

He has one daughter, GRACE, and had been twice married but both wives are
dead. He was about 50 years of age and formerly was in the mercantile
business at Russell and Zero, and was postmaster when the mines run and
until the office was abolished. It is said his body was mangled to a
considerable extent.
