DERBY ITEMS:

News scarce up here; our business men not very much rushed just now.

Corn gathering progressing slowly but still corn is most too sappy to crib.

The number of old pioneer farmers in and around Derby, who used to husk 80 to 100 bushels per day is astonishing. Old Uncle ABE MITCHELL has concluded that others can do as much in that line as he can, owing to the fact that in a contest the other day he was laid out by a young fellow in the husking business.

The Old Man - WOOLY down in Warren Twp. returned home from Ill. a short time since where he had made arrangements to capture a charming widow, provided she met him in Chariton. At the appointed time Father WOOLY was then all smiles and hopeful suspense but the widow was not and now the disconsolate old gent believes in SAM WELLER'S advice to "Beware of the widows. . ."

Dr. WALL was more fortunate and on Tuesday night married MRS. ELLEN SCOTT, daughter of ISAAC DENNIS; Rev. Daily and wife, officiating. The newly married couple have a pair of boys to start with. They have gone to housekeeping in F. ENSLOWS residence.

E.M. BLIZZARD has rented his farm and moved to town to engage more extensively in the butcher business.

MRS. WILLOUGHBY has taken charge of the Revere House and intends making it a first class hotel.

The new School building has received the second coat of plastering, it being under the management of our energetic director and P.M., B.F. CHAPMAN, will soon be ready for occupation.

Our young friend, CHARLEY BELL, who left Derby a few months ago for the West, is at Salem, Oregon. He writes that he likes the country, and thinks he will settle there for good.
