Page 5John Schafer was born in Germany April 28, 1840 and died in Grandview, Iowa, May 30, 1919, aged 79 years and one month. He came to this country in 1854 and first settled in Muscatine, Iowa. He enlisted in the army in 1862 and served three years. He was thoroughly loyal to his adopted country. Mr. Schafer was converted in 1860 at a camp meeting near Wilton Junction and united with the Methodist church of which he was ever a true and loyal member.
Deceased was married November 23, 1865 to Anna C. Hucke and to this union were born seven children, four of whom survive: Martha Elizabeth, wife of Wm. Beik of Grandview, John Henry Schafer of Letts, John Robert Schafer of Grandview and George Franklin Schafer of West Liberty. His first wife died Dec. 29, 1910 and on July 31, 1013 he was married to Mrs. Lena Schleichart, who survives. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Grandview Sunday afternoon and interment made in the Grandview cemetery.
