Page 1Miss Mary Schafer daughter of Mrs. Barbara Schafer, residing east of this city, died at the Hershey hospital in Muscatine, Thursday morning, September 14. She had been ill for some time with a complication of diseases, and two weeks ago was taken to the Hershey hospital in hope that treatment there would prove beneficial, but she gradually grew worse until the end came at 6 o'clock last Thursday morning. The cause of her death was cancer.
Mary Schafer was born at Buffalo, N.Y, on February 22, 1853 and came to Iowa with her parents when but a child. Many years ago she moved to Abilene, Kansas, where she operated a fashionable millinery establishment. Later her mother became an invalid and Miss Mary was called home to care for her. The deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. Barbara Schafer of Wapello; six sisters, Mrs. Albert J. Leyda, of Muscatine Mrs. Kate Williams of Wapello; Mrs. Sarah Callahan, of Coffeeville, Kans.; Mrs. Edward Barnard and Mrs. N. W. Meyers of Muscatine, and Mrs. Wilbur Van Cleefe, of Guthrie Center, Kans.; also two brothers, Louis Schafer of Abliene, Kans., and Samuel Schafer of Wapello.
The remains were taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. Meyers, in Muscatine and were brought to this city Saturday and funeral services were held from the Harrison church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. W. R. Coventry. Interment in the Harrison cemetery.
