James T. Gawthrop passed away at his home in Burlington at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, Sept. 7th. He was 84 years and 26 days of age and the burden of those four score and four years was the cause of his death. James Thomas Gawthrop was born in Maryland, August 11, 1832. he came west as a young man and had been living in or near Burlington the past sixty-six years. He was a carpenter by trade, a skilled workman, who was ever in demand, and he remained busy until a few years ago, when the ills attendant upon advancing age compelled him to lay aside the tools that he loved so well.

He is survived by six children, the wife having preceded him to the other shore some eight years ago. The children are: Mrs. J. N. Sanchez, Omaha; Mrs. S.G. Mathews, Mrs. A.G. Lee and E. O. Gawtrop of this city; S. R. Gawthrop of Pharr, Texas and Charles Gawthrop of Morning Sun. There are twenty-nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral was held from the family home in Burlington at 11:30 Saturday morning. The remains were taken to Morning Sun and services held there at 2:30 o'clock from the M. E. church, with interment in Elmwood cemetery.
