Page 1Mary Ann Close, daughter of Jacob and Lydia Close, was born January 24, 1838, at Maryland, Ohio, and died Nov. 17, 1913, at Wapello, Iowa, aged 75 years, 9 months and 23 days. She was one of a family of 7 children, at the age of 10 she moved with her parents to Iowa, where she has since resided except 2 years spent in Missouri. In 1855 she was married to John Schultz. To them were born 2 sons and one daughter. The oldest and youngest preceded her to the better land. One son, Jacob, with whom she lived and who, for the past nine years had been her greatest comfort and companion, remains to mourn her loss.
There are also three sisters living, Mrs. Lydia Jackson of Burlington, Iowa, Mrs. Rebecca Tucker, of Missouri and Mrs. Amanda Watt, of Louisa county, Iowa. Both Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Tucker are now very near death' door not expected in live. Another sister preceded her only 2 months ago. Her only brother, Henry Close, died in Andersonville prison during the Civil war.
Her husband, John Schultz, enlisted in the Civil War and served one year and nine months. He was sent home on a sick furlough and died six weeks later. She was married a second time in 1872 to Jacob Peterson at Burlington, Iowa. In 1904 she was again bereaved and laid away to rest her second husband in Northfield cemetery, where by her own request she was buried. She was never in very good health and largely confined to her home, but those who knew her loved her; a devoted mother and a kind neighbor.
She was converted in childhood and for many years was a member of the Lutheran church. Later in life she was united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Her faith in Christ was strong. With her own hands her burial robes were prepared and the funeral services were carried out according to her expressed wish. The funeral services were held int he M. E. church on Wednesday, November 19, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A.W. McBlain, assisted by Rev. Sydman of the Presbyterian church, and the body laid beside her husband in Northfield cemetery, Des Moines county, Iowa.
