Joseph R. Shipman, son of John B. and Keziah Shipman, was born in Sharp Ridge, Penn., March 7, 1838, and died in Wapello, Nov. 6, 1913, aged 75 years, 7 months and 29 days. He moved with his parents to Iowa in April, 1858, where he farmed except while at the front, until twelve or fifteen years ago, when he retired and moved to town. In August, 1870, he was married to Laurenia Stoupe and to this union was born three children: Charles F., of Chicago, Ill.; Myrtle M. Main, of Latty, Iowa and Carrie L. Dunn, of Corsicana, Texas. These and the faithful wife survive him. He was one of a family of ten. They have crossed the river one by one until only one, Oliver E. Shipman of this city, remains. When the war broke out, he, with other friends, enlisted in Co F. 19th Iowa Infantry. He was a faithful husband, loving father, a fine friend, a loyal citizen, a helpful neighbor. His familiar form will be greatly missed.

In July he had a stroke of paralysis from which he partially recovered and was able to be about. Two weeks ago last Thursday he was again stricken and although he rallied a little, he never was able to be up. He became unconscious and gradually weakened until he quietly passed away without a struggle Thursday afternoon at 1:30. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.W. McBlain, under the auspices of the A. M. Taylor G. A. R. Post No. 153, with interment in the Wapello cemetery.
