Page 1In the death of J. D. McCulley, a long time resident of Louisa county, the community lost one of its most honored citizens, his demise came as a shock to his friends. James D. McCulley was born June 24, 1840, in Green county, Ohio and died at his home north of Wapello, Iowa, Oct. 28, 1913, aged 73 years, 4 months and 4 days. While quite young he came with his parents west, settling near old Nauvoo, Ill. and later removed to Lee county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. When the civil war broke out he enlisted at Keokuk, Iowa in 1861, serving faithfully until the close of the war in Co. B., 3rd Regiment Cavalry and was mustered out of service at Davenport in 1865.
Soon after the war he was married to Miss Martha Hutchison and came to Louisa county, settling north of Wapello, where the family still reside. He leaves to mourn his death his faithful and loving wife, and four children, Mrs. Jennie McGill, of Constance, Minn.; Wm. H. of Wapello; Robert W and Homer F., both of Grangeville, Idaho. Two children Emma A., at age 12 and Harvey D. aged two months, have preceded him in death.
As a citizen, Mr. McCulley was honorable and upright in character. A man whose word was his bond; as a husband and father, faithful, kind and true; as a neighbor, always accommodating and thoughtful, just and generous. Mr. McCulley was an earnest student of God's word an earnest, faithful teacher, kind, patient and always humble. A large gathering of friends, neighbors and relatives attended the funeral which was held from Mt. Hope, conducted by J. R. Hammond. Interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
