James Pemble was born in Kent, England, November 5th, 1831. He died at his home in Louisa county, Iowa. September 1st, 1913, aged 81 years, 9 months and 26 days. He came to America when 10 years of age, and first made his home in Saratoga county, New York. He stayed there but a short time and then walked to Illinois. Here he hired out to work on a farm at four dollars a month. The lad was at that time so poor that he wore trousers made of bed ticking. On January 16th, 1855, he was married to Marion Wyman, at Brimfield, Peoria county, Illinois. With her he lived until on April 1st, just five months ago, she was called away by death. In 1860 he moved into Iowa and has lived here ever since. To Mr. and Mrs. Pemble were born nine children, seven of whom are still living. they are: Charles E., of Peoria, Ill.; Frank I., of Wapello; Fannie M., wife of F. L. Kennedy of Muscatine; Justin Day, of Springfield, Ill.; Erminnie May, wife of Wm. Lieberknecht, of Letts, Iowa; Ada L., wife of C. W. Johans, of Wapello and Raymond H., of Saint Anthony, Idaho.

Mr. Pemble was a man of strict (unreadable) A few days before his death he asked his son, Frank, who was caring for him, to see that all bills outstanding against him were paid as he wished, when he went out of this world to go owing no man anything. And after his son had reported to him that all bills were settled he seemed much more contented. Mr. Pemble never made any formal professions of religion, but since his wife's death he had an intense longing for her. About two or three weeks before his death, some of the family were talking with him on the subject of his soul's welfare and he listened with an interest never before manifested, and a few days ago said to his nurse, " I will soon be in glory with dear old mother." He gave directions concerning the funeral services, saying that he wished them conducted as were those of his wife, with the same minister, pall bearers, etc., and in the same church. They were held in the Harrison church on Wednesday, September 3, just five months after his wife's and were conducted by the Rev. E. C. Brooks, the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in Wapello. The interment was in the Harrison cemetery.
