Capt. Hugh L. Creighton, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Oakville and well known throughout the county, committed suicide last Thursday night by severing an artery in his left arm above the elbow. The discovery of his death was made at 7:45 o'clock, Friday morning, when his brother, Joseph H. Creighton, went to call him. Deceased had taken his meals with his brother and family for several years. When discovered he had been dead about ten hours, so it is supposed that he died shortly after his return from uptown, about 8:30 o'clock.

Hugh L. Creighton was born in Louisa county, Ia., January 27, 1837; died at Oakville, Dec. 19, 1907, aged 70 years, 10 months and 22 days. He was reared upon his father's farm and remained in the parental home until eighteen years of age, when he went to Kossouth, Iowa and there attended the Yellow Springs college. He then engaged in teaching and farming until the breaking out of the civil war, when in April, 1861, he enlisted in the First Iowa infantry. On August 9, 1862, he reenlisted in the Thirtieth Iowa Infantry, Company C, and was commissioned second lieutenant. He was slightly wounded at the battle of Arkansas Post by a musket ball. At Vicksburg he was promoted to First lieutenant and at Cherokee Station to the rank of captain.

After his discharge Captain Creighton returned to his home and then purchased an interest in a farm in Des Moines county, upon which he lived for six years. About fifteen years ago he moved to Oakville, and has since lived alone at his home on Main street. The last few years he has been engaged in real estate and notary public work, On January 20, 1866, he was united in marriage to Emily A. Osborne, a native of Ohio. To this union was born three children: William J., Winifred and Pearl.
