Page 1Capt. J. L. Grubb, the oldest citizen of Columbus Junction, and one of the most prominent before he retired from active life, passed away at his home Tuesday about 7 o'clock. Captain Grubb led Company C, of the Fifth Iowa infantry in the Civil war, the first company enlisted in Louisa county. He saw active service until he suffered a sunstroke in 1862, which disabled him from further participation in the war. In 1868 he was elected sheriff of this county, a position he held for six years. He was postmaster there for several years, retiring with the Cleveland administration. He was born in Virginia, in 1819, was twice married, having four children by his first wife and two by his second. He was prominent until retirement as a merchant and real estate dealer. The cause of death was old age.
