John Blake, a well known and prominent farmer of Letts, hung himself early Friday morning, Oct. 20, in the summer kitchen. He had a stroke of paralysis a year ago and had been melancholy and despondent ever since. He got up during the night tied a rope around his neck and jumped off the top of a washing machine, after tying the rope to a rafter overhead. His wife found found him this morning. She is prostrated. He leaves three children. It is thought his mind had been failing for some time. He called his son at 3 o'clock in the morning, telling him there was something disturbing the chickens. The son got up and went out to see what was the matter, and the father was also up and dressed at the time, and he undressed and went back to bed. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at Cedar Bethel church and the interment was at the same place.
