Mrs. Esther (Sanberger) Smith was born in Buffalo, N. Y. March 31, 1831 and died at the home of her son, Chas. M. Smith, in Albany Mo., Sept. 16, 1905, aged 70 years, 5 months and 16 days. At an early age she went to Belmont, Wis., where she engaged in teaching for a number of years until her marriage to David H. Smith, Oct. 25, 1855. Her husband preceded her to the Unknown Land 8 months and twenty-three days. Six children were born to them, two girls dying in infancy. Those still living are H. H. Smith, Huston, Tex., C. M., Albany, Mo., Will C., Wapello and Myra E. Harnessand, Huston, Texas.

She united with the M. E. church in early life and continued in its membership until called from her labors. Her husband was an invalid for a number of years and as a result, it is thought, of her unwearied devotion in caring for him she was stricken with paralysis shortly after his death. Last spring she went to spend the summer with her son and daughter in Huston Tex. because of the prevalence of the Yellow Fever in the south, she came to the home of her son in Missouri about a month ago, where she was again stricken with apoplexy on September 12, from which she never rallied. The funeral services were held at the home of her son, W. C. Smith, in Jefferson township, conducted by Rev. M. E. Reusch, in the presence of a large number of relatives and old friends. Interment in the Mallory cemetery.
