George Bolton, one of Columbus City township's aged and most highly respected citizens, died very suddenly Saturday evening. He was sick but a few minutes, the apparent cause of his sudden death being heart trouble. Mr. Bolton had been in Columbus Junction during the afternoon and while not a strong man, he was seemingly as well as usual and was in his usual happy and jolly frame of mind. After reaching home he complained of not feeling well and a doctor was summoned, but before he reached the home Mr. Bolton had answered the death call, and his spirit had passed to the great beyond; but few of the family were present when the end came.

Mr. Bolton was a native of England, where he was born May 9, 1830, coming with his family to America when quite young. He was the youngest of a family of eight children, the eldest, Edmund and his brother, John, coming with him to Iowa in 1854, locating near Wapello. Both of the latter were familiar characters here twenty-five years ago or more. Edmund, who was a bachelor and somewhat eccentric, residing in Wapello, and John living on the old homestead now owned by Chris Weber. On Oct. 21, 1856, Mr. Bolton was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Blanchard, by Esquire Jacob Mintum, at the home of Uncle Jimmy Blanchard, where she was making her home.

He leaves his aged wife, four sons and three daughters to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Cassabaum, died about a year ago. Those who survive are William, George, John and Wesley, Mrs. George Hanft, Mrs. Harvey Skipton, and Mrs. Lee Cuttcomb. Brief funeral services were held from the later home Tuesday morning, after which the remains were taken to the U. B. church, where a memorial service was held, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. Ballard. Burial at Columbus City cemetery.
