Robert E. Benton, son of Oliver and Nancy E. Benton, was born in Ohio March 21st, 1823, and closed his earthly pilgrimage last Saturday at 10 a. m., at the ripe age of 82 years, 1 month and 39 days. Of his father's family, consisting of 4 sons and 2 daughter, there is but on surviving member a sister living at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Mr. Benton came to this state with his parents in 1842. Here he lived and worked in the building of this community and has taken his part in the issues of the day, having represent this county in the 16th General assembly of the Legislature for a term of two years, '76 and '77.

The subject of this memorial was never married, living some of his life alone. During the last years, and through his last illness, which extended over three months, he was kindly cared for by his nephew, Benton Sloan, and wife. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Cooper Monday afternoon, May 22, at the Presbyterian church, Oakland, in the presence of a large company of old neighbors, where he was laid to rest in the quiet country church yard.
