Little Velma Wilkerson, who had a foot crushed by the wheels of a Rock Island freight train, died from her injuries last Monday morning at 12:30. The attending physicians, Grimes & Chittum, did all in their power to save the little girl's foot, but owing to existing conditions decided last Saturday that amputation must be resorted to as a last hope of saving the little one's life. Dr. Messenger and Rogers were called in to assist in the operation which was performed Saturday forenoon. Owing to the limb being also badly injured it was necessary to take it off above the knee. The operation was successfully performed, but the patient never recovered fully from the shock and death finally relieved her intense suffering at the time stated above. She was conscious at times after the operation. The funeral services were held from the Christian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dunkleberger, interment in Wapello cemetery.
