Tuesday afternoon about 2 o'clock, the people of Wapello were startled by news of the sudden and wholly unexpected death of Edward Colton, proprietor of the Thompson Pharmacy, and one of our best beloved and most highly respected citizens. Mr. Colton has been subject to heart trouble for some years and has occasionally had attacks of illness brought on by overexertion. Tuesday he picked berries in the forenoon and became over heated; this brought on acute palpitations of the heart, which was the immediate cause of his death.

Edward Colton was the son of Patrick and Hannah Colton, was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania, August 21st, 1836, and came with his parents to this county in 1842. He grew to manhood near the parental home in Union township. He was married to Mrs. Anna Gould March 4, 1866. Mrs. Jessie Thompson is their only child. In 1884, Mr. Colton retired from his farm. In 1895 he and his good wife came with Mr. and Mrs. Thompson to make their home in Wapello. The death of Mr. Thompson three years ago was a severe blow to Mr. Colton for he loved him, not as a son-in-law, but as a son.

Edward Colton came of as pioneer stock ever settled in Louisa county. In his father's family were ten children, four of whom still survive, and all of whom have been rated among the best and worthiest men and women of the county. Mr. Colton was one of those even tempered men who never gave offense or made an enemy and yet was a man of positive convictions who thought and acted for himself. He was a man of pure moral, of strict integrity and of the strongest affections. It is believed that, as near as human frailty will permit, he lived a spotless life. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at the late residence of Mr. Colton and the interment will be in the Wapello cemetery.
