At 6:15 0'clock, Tuesday morning, October 13th, 1891, at his home in Wapello, Iowa, occurred the death of James S. Hurley. Four years ago last month he suffered a stroke of paralysis which seemed for a time would soon end his life. He rallied and during the weeks and months since he has been by turn better and worse. Monday he was at the office and Court house and the only day since he was stricken, he did not lie down to rest. He retired at the usual hour and seemed to sleep well until half past three, when he got up. His wife, seeing that he had difficulty in getting back to bed, arose and helped him. When she spoke to him she noticed that his answer was peculiar and unintelligible The other members of the family aroused and the doctor was speedily summons, but he could render no assistance.

He whose name heads this article was born in Champaign county, Ohio, May 18th, 1829, the son of David Hurley, who came to this county with his family in 1840. When about 23 years old he began to study of law under the direction of B. F. Wright, Esq., and during the winter of 1853-4 attended a law school in Dubuque. Admitted to the bar in the spring of 1854 he began the practice of his profession in Wapello. The follow year he was elected County Attorney. In 1861 he was elected to represent the 14th district in the State Senate for four years and again elected to the position in 1869.

His marriage to Miss Martha A. Garrett occurred at Garrettsville, Ohio in May 1857 and there has been born to them five sons and four daughters, of whom one son and all the daughters, together with the wife survive him. Mr. Hurley, in early life, afflicted with the old Whig party, but when the Republic, Wapello, Iowaan party was formed he joined himself to that. The funeral will occur from the late home today at 1 o'clock, and the remains will be interred in the Wapello cemetery.
