Harry Childerhouse, a highly esteemed young man of this community passed away at his home at 1:30 this Thursday morning following an acute illness of more than seven weeks arising from gas and shell shock injuries received during service overseas in the World War. He was born in Norfolk, England, July 15, 1889 and came to the United States eight years ago. Six years ago he came to Iowa and located in Columbus City where he engaged in farming until the breaking out of the world war when he joined the forces of the U. S. in the 35th infantry of the 7th Division. He participated in a 31 day battle near Metz where he was gassed and shell shocked and sent to base hospital 44. Here he spent eight weeks, after able to be out he visited his mother and sisters at Appleboro, England and later returned to this country.

He steadily regained in health and August 7, 1919, he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Allen at Columbus City. In the early part of this year a recurrence of the effects of the gas and shell shock developed and he went to a Muscatine hospital for treatment but medical skill seemed powerless and he grew steadily worse.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Eileen and Mary Jane and by his mother in England and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Edgar, of Benton, Illinois. A younger brother was killed during the war in the English army and a sister died in July of this year. He was a member of the Methodist church at Columbus City. He was a splendid, industrious young man. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at Columbus City, Friday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. R. C. Prewitt and interment will be made in the Columbus City cemetery.
