Page 1John W. Schaning, a veteran of the Civil War and a resident of this community for many years, passed away at an early hour Friday morning following a brief illness of several weeks. John W. Schaning was born at Palmyra, Illinois, April 23, 1842. Later he moved to Jacksonville, Illinois and in 1879, he came to Iowa and located at Fredonia which has since been his home. His wife, who was Miss Jennie Mickey, preceded him in death six years ago.
Mr. Schaning was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends in this community. He was strictly honorable in his dealing with his fellow men and always had a pleasant smile, a good word and a quaint joke for everyone. He was a member of the Methodist church at Fredonia and of the G. A. R., Masonic and I. O. O. F. Orders. The funeral services were held at the Fredonia Methodist church Sunday afternoon at three o'clock conducted by Rev. W. S. Knight and Rev. W. H. Dillon with Interment in the Indian Creek cemetery. The service at the grave was in charge of the local Masonic order.
