J. S. Gipple, one of the pioneer residents of Louisa county, died at the home of his son T. J. Gipple, in the Spring Run Neighborhood, Monday morning, August 27, 1917 following a brief illness of but a few days although for the past six years Mr. Gipple has been bedfast making his home with his son. John S. Gipple was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1823 and was the oldest in a family of ten children. His parents were George and Mary Ann (Stroh) Gipple. In 1847 Mr. Gipple was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Hoover in Dauphin county. They continued to make that their home until 1852 they came west and located in Louisa county settling in Concord township near Grandview.

He was one of the charter members in the establishment of the Evangelical church at Grandview. His father was the first Class Leader of the Grandview church. Mr. Gipple took an active interest in the political and social affairs of the community and was repeatedly elected to various offices of trust. In 1887 he retired from active life and moved to Letts where he resided until six years ago when he came to make his home with his son.

Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gipple, four of who survive. They are: T. J. Gipple, of the Spring Run Neighborhood, James Gipple of Bentonville, Arkansas; Mrs. B. F. Knott, of Columbus City and Mrs. T. L. Waltman, of Hurdland, Missouri. Mr. Gipple is also survived by two brothers, Isaiah Gipple of Grandview and Chas. of Ft. Scott, Kansas and two sisters,Mrs. Mary Zimmerman , of Grandview and Mrs. Julia A. Eggy of Pennsylvania. A short funeral service was held at the home of his son Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock after which the remains were taken to the Fredonia church where the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. T. F. Barker, of Keota, assisted by Rev. Geo. Sauffacher, of Cairo. Interment in the Cedar Bethel cemetery.
