M. D. Hanft, a prominent and highly esteemed resident of this city, passed away Saturday morning at his home on South Hill after a brief illness of three weeks. Milton Dailor Hanft was born in Lehigh county, Pennsylvania, Sept. 26, 1853 and made that state his home until 1864 when he came with his parents to this state and settled with them on a farm near Columbus City. He remained at home assisting his father in the work of the farm until he was twenty years of age, when he rented some land from his father and began farming for himself. He continued farming as a renter for the following nine years until by diligence and frugality he acquired sufficient capital to purchase a home for himself buying at that time the home farm southeast of Columbus City where his son, Todd, now lives. On Christmas Day 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Cutcomp of near Columbus City.

In the fall of 1877 both he and his young wife made a profession of religion and later united with the United Brethren church at Columbus City, in which organization both have faithfully continued their membership. In the fall of 1907 he moved with his family to Columbus Junction which has since been his home and took an active part promoting the welfare and interest of this city. He is survived by his wife, his aged mother, Mrs. Helena Hanft of this city; and three daughters and four sons as follows. Mrs. Amanda Bretz, Louis S., Todd Milton, Mrs. Maude Shearer, John H., all of whom live in this vicinity and Laura and Hale at home. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters. Jacob A., Theodore F., George S., Mrs. Emma Heindel, Mrs. Geo. Wren, John T., and Mrs. A. J. Willett, all of whom live in or near this city except Mrs. Wren, whose home is at Sheridan, Wyoming. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Schwimley of Iowa City, assisted by local and visiting pastors were held Monday afternoon at the United Brethren church at Columbus City. Interment at the Columbus City cemetery.
