The people of both Louisa and Des Moines counties were shocked to hear the death of Hugh Creighton by his own hand at his home in Oakville, Thursday night, December 19. The terrible deed was not discovered until Friday morning, when his brother, Joe Creighton, with whom he took his meals, two blocks away, made the ghastly discovery when he went to see why he had not come to his breakfast. He had done the deadly work with a razor he had bought the day before, ostensibly for trimming his corns. It was found that he had cut a gash two inches long into the jugular vein. There was also quite a cut on his left arm, but this was probably accidental. This act was evidently done early in the evening. What caused him to hurry himself out of the world is all mere conjecture, as he left no explanation nor had his actions previous betrayed any such purpose.

He had lived alone for many years, he and his family of wife, two daughters and a son, having separated, the children going with the mother. Their home is, and had been for some years, in, Peoria, Illinois. Those who saw him everyday, tell us that he had been breaking down very rapidly the last few months as indicated by the nervous twitching in his hands and his walk. He probably grew despondent and thinking he might become a charge on his friends...but little to live for, decided to end it all by taking his own life. The rest of the article is damaged and can not be read.
