After years of suffering from a bullet wound and its complications received at the battle of Iuka, in September, 1862, James Stevens passed away to the great beyond Tuesday morning of this week, May 21, 1907. To the obituary given him by one of our Columbus city correspondents, the Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa desires to add just a few words. We have known Mr. Stevens since our coming here in 1884 and though differing with him politically, we were always glad to know him as a sincere friend. He was a broad and liberal man, though an earnest and sincere Christian gentleman. Though one who suffered much and for many, many years as a result of his devotion to his country, there was no bitterness ever exhibited. Take him in any relation of life, and James F. Stevens was a good and noble man. Only two weeks before he was named as one of the pall bearers for his captain, J. L. Grubb, bur simply as an honorary one, as he was unable to attend. In his death this community has lost an exemplary and honest man; who will be missed.
