Michael Charles was born in Germany, December 9, 1817. He came to this country in 1848, landing at New York where he lived about one year, going from there to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he was married. This was the home of James Buchanan. Mr. Charles was one of the active participants in the presidential campaign of 1856. Many unique features of which have been related to the writer, by the subject of our sketch, which were very interesting.

To Mr. Charles and wife, while living in Lancaster, were born three children; Mrs. John Kammerer, of Wapello, deceased some nineteen years ago; Mrs. N. G. Coder, of Letts and Mrs. W. J. Kirkwood, San Diego, Cal. About the year 1858, Mr. Charles moved to Louisa County, Iowa locating at Port Louisa, which town, at that time, was the leading shipping and commercial business center for many miles. In the spring of 1874 he moved and located in Grandview township, where he has continuously resided until his death, January 20, 1906.

Mrs. Charles preceded him some four years ago. Since that time he had been making his home with his daughter's Mrs. N. G. Coder, Letts and Mrs. Wm. H. McGill, Grandview township, the latter place he considered his real home and there spent most of the remaining days. Besides the above named children he leaves Mrs. Lou Richardson, of Blodgett, Oregon, Mrs. John B. Judson, San Diego, Cal., and one son, Joseph Charles, of Cairo, with numerous grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the home of W. H. McGill, Rev. Henry G. Everett, pastor of German congregational church of Grandview officiating. The remains were interred in Port Louisa cemetery. The pall bearers were the following grandchildren; J. G. Kammerer, Muscatine; Charles and Otto Kammerer, Wapello; Arthur McGill Grandview township; Bert and J. Q. Coder, Letts.
