William M. McCormick was born in Harrison county, Ohio, July 1856 and died at Letts, Iowa, October 30, 1905. He was the son of John and Esther McCormick, natives of Ohio. Mr. McCormick came to Louisa county, Iowa when about fourteen years old where he joined his brother, who resided in Elm Grove township. He entered the Columbus City school. Finishing there he taught school for a time, then entered the employ of Colton and Garner as clerk remaining with the firm until July 1882, when he formed a partnership with W. H. Hughes in the general merchandising at Columbus Junction under the firm name of Hughes and McCormick.

He continued in the business until March, 1888, when he accepted the position as manager of the Letts Co-Operative store, which position he held until the organization of the Letts bank when he was chosen cashier at that institution, where he remained until his death. At Columbus City, May 17, 1878 he was married to Miss Elizabeth D. Reiner who with their two sons Edwin R. and Max J. are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. Of his immediate family he leaves three brothers. Politically, he was a republican, but was never an office seeker. He was a member of the K.? and A. F and A. M. associations. The funeral was conducted from the U. B. church at Letts, Iowa October 28, Rev. Childress officiating; after which the remains were taken to Columbus City for interment. The Mason had charge of the services at the cemetery.
