Cedar Bethel, October 24, This community was very shocked Saturday morning to learn of the death of John Blake. He was despondent on account of ill health and hung himself to a rafter in the summer kitchen with a strap. He brooded over his condition to such and extent that it weakened his mind and caused him to take his own life. He was sixty-two years and seven days old and is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter. The children are Clarence, Cella and Frank and Mrs. David Gage and four grandchildren; also three brothers, James of Letts and Aleck and Major of Fredonia. The funeral was held at Cedar Bethel Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L.S. Chamberlin and was very large. The remains were laid to rest in the Cedar Bethel cemetery.

Page 5 - John Blake was born in Oakland township, this county, October 14, 1843. He died at his home five miles north of Fredonia, in Muscatine county, October 21, 1905. He was thus sixty-two years and seven days old at the time of his death. On April 10, 1865, he was married to Miss Sarah Graves, who with four children, survive him. The children are Clarence, Cella and Frank and Myrtle, wife of David Gage. Besides these there was a daughter born to them who died in infancy. He is also survived by three brothers, James, Alexander and Major who with the children, all live in this community. The funeral was held at the Cedar Grove Bethel Sunday October 22 at 2 o'clock p. m., conducted by Rev. L. F. Chamberlin. Nearly two years ago he suffered from a paralytic stoke since which time he has been able to do little to help himself or family. We believe he was associated with no church, but was a man of the strictest integrity. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
