On Monday, February 15, 15 11:30 a. m. John Chown passed away at his home at this place. He had been ill with pneumonia for about ten days. He was born in Devonshire, England, January 11, 1830, and on July 5, 1843 was married to Miss Eliza Aplin and to them eleven children were born, among them three pairs of twins. Of these only four remain; Mrs Mary Foster and Louis Chown of Nichols and George Chown and Mrs. Eliza Breckenridge of Columbus Junction, all of whom were with their father during his last illness.

Soon after his marriage Mr. Chown came to America and lived for a time in Virginia and afterward at Zanesville, Ohio, from which place he came to Muscatine county, Iowa in 1856 and this was their home until the death of Mrs. Chown in 1874, after which Mr. Chown lived with his children, until January of last year when he came to Columbus Junction and bought a home on West Hill and his daughter, Mrs. Breckenridge has kept house for him. Besides his children, he leaves sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren to mourn for him. Short funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock and on Wednesday morning the remains were taken to the old home and services were held at High Prairie Chapel in Muscatine county and interment was made at that place beside his wife. These services were conducted by Rev. Kenrick of the M. E. church.
