About 5 o'clock Monday morning Mrs. I. C. Freeland passed to the great beyond after many months of pain and suffering, borne with the sweetness and patience of a saint. Her maiden name was Julia A. Martin, and she was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, on the 18th of February, 1838, so lacking a little over two months of being sixty- six years of age. She came with her parents to Grandview in 1851 and two years later was married to I. C. Freeland who survives her. To them were born four children: G. A., of Kansas City; T. L. of Fontana, Kansas; Mrs. Kate E. Barnett, of Letts and James G. who died in 1895. None of her children were with her when she died, but all the surviving ones were present at her funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. Freeland made their home in Grandview until 1879, when they removed to Letts where they lived until 1889, when they came to Columbus Junction which has since been their home. One of Mrs. Freeland's striking characteristics was her love for flowers and she spent much time cultivating them, her home being a veritable flower garden. These she loved to share with others and she gave them away with lavish hand. While still a young woman she became a member of the Methodist church and remained a faithful worker in that church until failing health rendered her unable to leave home. She had been an invalid for many years, but her death was caused by cancer of the breast which first appeared about a year and a half ago and from which she suffered intensely for several months. Her friend, Mrs. A. B. Shipman, cared for her through all the last months of her illness with a self sacrificing devotion as beautiful as it is rare. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Letts on Tuesday, December 16, at 11:30, conducted by Rev. J. C. Kendrick of Columbus Junction, assisted by Revs. Montgomery and Childress of Letts. The pallbearers were, J. M. Dotson, E. W. Murdock, R. J. Reaney, Elmer Meeker, S. W. Noland and J. W. See.
