Ellen Colton Gamble was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania, April 2, 1834, and died at her home here, February 2, 1902, her age being nearly 68 years. When she was only eight years old, she came with her father's family to Iowa, settling in this county. This continued to be her home not only of herself but of the entire family. Of the eleven children in the family, five brothers only remain; these are James, Thomas and John, of Union township, Frank of Columbus City and Edward of Wapello.

January 17, 1854 she was married to Andrew J. Gamble, who died more than twenty-five years ago. She was the mother of ten children, eight of whom survive her; Mrs. Eve Fogarty of Jamestown, North Dakota; Mrs. Kate Turner, Brooklyn, New York; Mrs Maggie Parmeter and Mrs. Josephine Greer, Cedar Rapids; William, also of Cedar Rapids, John of Kansas City, Hooker and Ed of Columbus Junction.

All of these were present at the time of Mrs. Gamble's death except Mrs. Fogerty, who visited her mother during her last illness. She was buried on Tuesday from her residence, funeral services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. Monroe Drew. She had been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years.
